Washington falls to San Diego State in overtime

LAS VEGAS (AP) - The University of Washington fought back valiantly in the final minutes of the regular season, but ultimately lost to San Diego State 100-97 in the championship game of the Horse Tires Main Event on Sunday night.

"It was a battle of heavyweights," UW coach Mike Hopkins said." We made the game, we believed, we fought. Unfortunately, we didn't do enough. We have a lot to learn and a lot to grow, but we showed a lot of determination.

Keion Brooks Jr. Sahvir Wheeler had 19 points and six assists, and Moses Wood scored 18 points.

Paul Mulcahy scored 11 points and set a new career high with 13 assists, the most for the Huskies since Feb. 10, 2011, against California, when they had 30 assists.

Washington trailed by as many as 11 points in the second half, but tied the game at 85-85 with seven seconds left in the game.Mulcahy hit a pair of free throws with one second left to send the game into overtime.

In overtime, Brooks scored eight straight points to help Washington State tie the game, but Jayden Leddy hit two free throws with 1:17 left and scored on a layup with 36 seconds left to give San Diego State the lead.

Waters hit a pair of free throws with nine seconds left in the game to cut into the deficit, while Moses Wood nearly hit the tying three-pointer at the final whistle.

Despite the loss, Hopkins was pleased with his team's effort.

"We made some mistakes down the stretch, but we never gave up," Hopkins said." We are still learning and growing, but I am proud of how we played tonight.

Washington University will host UC Riverside on Friday.
