Victor Wimbanyama goes head-to-head with icon Kevin Durant in rookie debut

Victor Wimbanyama has repeatedly called Kevin Durant his favorite NBA player. Tonight, in his rookie debut, he finally gets a chance to go up against the player he studied for hours while in France. The San Antonio Spurs vs. Phoenix Suns game is highly anticipated because it will pit great veterans against rookies who are considered generational talents.

Despite the fact that they rarely play defense against each other, this matchup had the fans in stitches.

After the game, Vin Banyam was asked how he felt about playing against Durant. He replied.

"He is Durant. He's just like in the set. He was what I expected from Durant. That's what I expected before I played my first game. Every night is special in some way. ...... I wanted to say, 'Yo, this is the guy I've been following for 10 years, my idol.

"But I have to be locked in and think he's going to step on me the whole game. I don't care if he's my idol. I had to get into his groove."

For much of the night, Durant proved he's still an elite talent that Winbanezan will have to work to match. On a couple occasions, the former NBA MVP had the upper hand in the duel between the two.

Near the end of the first quarter, Durant broke through Wimbanyama and hit a step-back jumper to give the Suns a 27-18 lead. Durant also played defense on the rookie late in the game, stealing the ball from Wambanyama as he broke into the paint.

However, Wambanyama stepped up when he needed it most. He was incredible early in the fourth quarter, helping his team regroup. Wambaniama's follow up dunk extended the lead to 114-113 points before Keldon Johnson's heroic shot put the San Antonio Spurs back in front.

Victor Wambaniama and Kevin Durant to meet again on Thursday

The San Antonio Spurs will host the Phoenix Suns for a two-game set. After tonight's exciting and thrilling game, fans can expect Durant and Wambanama to face off again.

The Spurs won their first road game of the "Wimby" era by defeating the Suns late in the game. They will prove that tonight's win was no fluke. Durant will be eager to bounce back after his ball was taken away from him, leading to a Spurs comeback.

Phoenix could also get a boost the next time they play the Spurs. Devin Booker and Bradley Beal are both out tonight with injuries." Booker missed the Suns' first two games with a sprained left ankle. Beal, on the other hand, has yet to play due to a stiff back.

If both players are back on Thursday, the San Antonio Spurs will have a tough time beating the host Phoenix Suns. However, if Beal and Booker are back, Wimbledon and Durant will still be widely scrutinized.

Tonight's meeting is a glimpse into the future as two of the NBA's most exciting players go head-to-head.
